Arun Jaitley Stadium Will be the new name of Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.
Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium will be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of its former president, Late Shri Arun Jaitley. Former finance minister and ace leader of BJP, Arun Jaitely passed away on 24 August 2019. Arunji also served as president of District Cricket Association (DDCA). During his tenure at DDCA, he renovated the stadium with modern facilities, constructing world-class dressing rooms and even expanding the capacity of the stadium to accommodate more fans.
The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Tuesday decided to rechristen Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of its former president who passed away on Saturday.
The renaming will take place on September 12 at a function where a stand at the Kotla will be named after India captain Virat Kohli as announced earlier.
Meanwhile, the DDCA tweeted out a clarification that seems to be a little confusing.
Speaking on this initiative, DDCA president Rajat Sharma said: “It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud.”
The stadium got its former name as it was near Kotla fort, and was named after Turkic ruler Firoz Shah Tughlaq of Tughlaq dynasty. It is the second oldest international cricket stadium still functional in India, after the Eden Gardens Kolkata. In addition to that, the DDCA has planned to name three stands of the stadium after former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath; and current captain Virat Kohli. It has also been decided to name the home team’s dressing room after Raman Lamba, and the opposition’s dressing room after Prakash Bhandari. Feroz Shah Kotla stadium will be named after Arun Jaitley sir as a token of respect and his love for the stadium.
