KXIP franchise has reportedly decided to discontinue with the current captain R Ashwin and hand over the captaincy to KL Rahul. KXIP failed to make it to the playoffs under the captaincy of R Ashwin who had led the team in the couple of IPL seasons. Ashwin was made captain of the team in 2018 after KXIP paid whopping 7.6cr to get him in the team. Unfortunately Ashwin could not change the fate of KXIP and they finished 6th in 2019 season of IPL.
Meanwhile another report has surfaced that suggests the veteran off-spinner is likely to join Delhi Capitals for IPL 2020. Delhi Capitals will be looking to strengthen the spinning side and R Ashwin can be a perfect choise.
“The deal with Ashwin should be through. The Capitals are very close to signing him. There are a few formalities that need to be taken care of,” a source was quoted as saying by Times of India.
R Ashwin is not likely to become the captain of Delhi Capitals side. Shreyas Ayer leads the Delhi Capitals team at the moment and team management seems to be happy with his performance.
Former India captain and Delhi Capitals mentor Sourav Ganguly, also responded to the media reports. “We would be more than happy to have Ashwin if KXIP is ready to release him,” said Ganguly.
Ashwin has played 139 matches in the IPL so far and has 125 wickets in his name at the economy of 6.79.
