Men in blue will soon be seen wearing a new brand name on their official jerseys. Bengaluru-based educational technology and online tutorial firm Byju’s is set to replace Chinese mobile manufacturer Oppo. Team India will sport the Oppo logo in the West Indies tour. The new jersey will be in use from September onwards.
In March 2017, Oppo had acquired the Indian team sponsorship rights for a five-year period, for an amount of Rs. 1,079 crores after outbidding Vivo mobiles’ Rs 768 crore bid. According to media reports, Oppo now finds the amount “extremely high” and “unsustainable”.
Oppo was paying BCCI a whopping amount of Rs 4.61 crore per bilateral match and Rs 1.56 crore for an ICC event game. BCCI is in no loss situation as the new company will pay the exact same amount what Oppo is paying for the entire duration of the deal which runs till March 31, 2022.
The BCCI has a clause which allows the transfer of sponsorship. The new deal will be between Oppo, Byju’s and the BCCI and will be signed this week.
According to the deal, Team India will sport the Byju’s logo in the upcoming home series against South Africa in September 2019.
