Afghanistan finished their 2019 World cup campaign on the last spot with not a single win. Though they had given a tough fight against teams like India and Pakistan, they could not convert it into the victory. This has forced Afghanistan Cricket board to rethink on the leadership strategy.
The sudden decision to remove experienced Asghar Afghan from the captaincy coasted Afghanistan quite a lot in the world. Gulbadin Naib was seen struggling at the crucial points. This affected the overall performance of the team. Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi were not able to leave a mark in this World Cup.
Earlier Afghanistan Cricket Board has put forward a slipt captaincy formula which failed miserably. Gulbadin Naib was named as the captain of the 2019 World Cup. Rashid Khan as T20I skipper while Rahmat Shah was made the Test captain. Many senior players including Mohammad Nabi was not so happy with the board’s decision to make Gulbadin Naib as the captain. The Afghan team was in news throughout the World cup due to their off-field issues. Rashid Khan was seen quoting “I don’t play for Gulbadin or cricket board, I play for Afghanistan” when asked about his relationship with the captain Gulbadin Naib.
